What Causes Indexable Tools to Drift

Several factors conspire against dimensional accuracy:

  • Insert seating variability: Each time you index, the insert may seat slightly differently—enough to shift bore size by thousandths. Dirty pockets or worn seats amplify this.
  • Pocket wear or damage: A chip lodged under the insert, a dent from impact, or gradual deformation changes where the cutting edge sits, resulting in oversize or out-of-round bores.
  • Improper clamping: Under-tightened screws allow movement during cutting. Over-tightening distorts the insert or pocket. Torque drivers ensure consistency.
  • Insert edge condition: Worn or honed inserts cut differently than sharp ground ones, creating heat and deflection that push the tool off-size.
  • Excessive projection: The farther the insert extends from the bar’s centerline, the greater the leverage and deflection—even on a rigid bar.
