What to Look For in Your Setup

Start by asking whether you’re using more bar than necessary. If you’re boring a 2-inch deep hole with 6 inches of overhang, you’re inviting trouble. Grip the bar deeply in the holder—ideally at least 4× the bar diameter. For a 0.750-inch bar, that means 3 inches minimum engagement.

Watch for deflection signs: shiny spots on the bar, rubbing marks, or consistent chatter at a certain depth. These indicate you’ve exceeded the bar’s natural stiffness limits. When standard steel bars start flexing, consider upgrading to carbide for deeper or precision bores, or to damped tooling when extreme depths demand it.
